How long does a locate take?

Once you have placed your locate request, you will recieve a clearance or field locate within 5 business days.
If you donot recieve either, please call DigLine Ontario for the status.

Do I need to be home when someone comes out?

No one needs to be home to receive a locate. Your paperwork will be left in your mailbox or front door.
We do recommend that you clearly mark out the area of excavation and when you call, let the operator know how
the area will be identified. If your property is gated, please leave unlocked and assure any pets are kept either chained
or inside for the locator to perform his work.

Is there a fee for my locate?

Locates are a free service.

How long is a locate valid for?

A locate is valid for 30 days from the date it is performed.

I have a leak in my basement and my contractor is coming tomorrow to fix it, can I have a locate today?

We do not provide same day service except in emergency situations. Please pre plan your excavation to allow our locator
5 days to perform the locate. See below for criteria required for emergencies.

What is the definition of an emergency locate?

An emergency is a loss of essential service or a public safety hazard. A crew must be on site ready to dig. A locator will respond
within 2 hours of your call to perform the locate.

What is the definition of a priorty locate?

A priority locate is a potential loss of essential service or a potential public safety hazard. The locator will respond within
48 hours to perform the locate.

What is a Mark & Drop?

The locate will be performed in your excavation area and paperwork will be dropped in your mailbox or front door.

How do I know when someone has come out?

You will recieve paperwork in your mailbox and if there are cables in your excavation there will be paint on the ground indicating the cables.

Can I call in for my neighbour?

You are allowed to call in for one or more of your neighbours, although we suggest that each homeowner call in their own locate request.
The locate sheet is a legal document and the individual requesting the locate could be held liable if there was any damage to the cables.

What sort of paint is used to locate?

All paint used is water based and will fade and disappear over time.

What color is the paint used?

Each utility is a different color, please check this website for the universal color chart. Rogers Cable will be marked in orange and tagged "CATV".

When I call DigLine Ontario and recieve a clearance over the phone, can I also receive it on paper?

Yes, if you provide a fax number. If you do not have access to a fax number an automated phone call will be made providing you with a clearance number.

Can I meet with a locator?

This is not a common procatice with homeowners, we suggest you clearly outline the excavation area. i.e. white spray paint, string, stakes, etc.

If I hire a contractor to perform the work, who calls in for the locate?

For liability reasons, the person performing the excavation should call in the locate. The individual or company calling in the locate assumes responsibility
